- Foreign-body contamination — metal, glass, plastic, or oversized agglomerates entering the product from packaging, upstream equipment, wear or the raw material itself.
- Cross-contamination and carryover — residue from one product or batch transferring into the next, a particular concern for allergens and for high-potency pharmaceutical ingredients.
- Microbial contamination — introduced through open handling, poor cleanability, or product held where it cannot be reached and cleaned.
- Dust and airborne loss — fine powder escaping at transfer points, creating a housekeeping, product-loss and — for many organic powders — a combustible-dust hazard.
Where the Risk Arises
The highest-risk moments are the transfer points — the steps where powder moves between vessels, machines or packages. Manual tipping and sack emptying expose product to the surrounding environment and to operator contact. Open conveying and decanting generate dust and offer routes for foreign bodies. Milling and blending can generate wear particles and, if equipment cannot be cleaned effectively, become sites for carryover. Because these steps are often where the fewest controls exist, they are where contamination control delivers the greatest return.

The most effective first step is to reduce open handling altogether.
