End-of-line packing starts with the box. If a case is formed cleanly and squarely, everything downstream, packing, sealing,  and palletising runs smoothly; if it is not, the whole line suffers from jams, poor seals and unstable pallets. An automatic case erector takes that first step out of manual hands and does it consistently, at speed. Advanced Packaging Systems (APS) supplies DNC case erecting equipment to New Zealand manufacturers, from semi-automatic units to fully automatic machines.

What a Case Erector Does

A case erector forms flat-packed cardboard blanks into open-top cases ready to be filled. It draws a blank from a magazine, folds it into box geometry, seals the bottom flaps with tape or hot-melt adhesive and transfers the formed case to the packing station. It is the first machine in a typical end-of-line sequence, and the quality of the box it produces sets the standard for every step that follows.

Why Automate Case Erecting

Forming boxes by hand is slow, tiring and inconsistent, and a poorly folded case causes problems further along the line. An automatic case erector delivers a consistently square, well-formed box every time, which makes downstream packing, sealing and palletising more reliable. It also lifts throughput to match the rest of the line, frees staff from a repetitive manual task, and reduces the jams and downtime that come from misformed cases. For any operation packing a reasonable volume of cartons, erecting is one of the most straightforward end-of-line steps to automate.

Semi-Automatic or Fully Automatic?

The right level of automation depends on volume. DNC’s semi-automatic case erectors form standard RSC (regular slotted container) boxes and can double as an ergonomic packing table, which suits lower volumes or operations that want to improve consistency and operator comfort without a full automation investment. Fully automatic case erectors form and seal cases continuously at higher speeds for busier lines, feeding a steady supply of ready boxes to an automated or manual packing station. Matching the machine to the throughput, rather than over- or under-specifying, is the key decision.

Sealing Options

How the case is closed can be chosen to suit the product and the box. DNC offers a choice of closure methods, pressure-sensitive tape, gummed paper tape, or hot-melt adhesive, for both the bottom seal formed at erecting and the top seal applied later by a case sealer. The right option depends on box weight, storage conditions and the look required; APS can advise on which suits a given application.

Fitting Into the End-of-Line

A case erector is the front end of a wider end-of-line sequence. Once a box is formed and filled, a case sealer closes the top, and a palletiser and stretch-wrapper prepare the finished cases for transport. DNC supplies this full end-of-line range, so the erector can be specified as part of a coordinated line rather than a standalone machine, an approach set out in the APS overview of end-of-line packing solutions from DNC. Case erecting also sits within the wider carton assembly and palletising equipment APS supplies.

Automatic Case Erectors in New Zealand

Advanced Packaging Systems supplies and supports DNC case erecting and end-of-line equipment for New Zealand food and manufacturing businesses. The APS team can help specify the right case erector, semi-automatic or fully automatic, for the box sizes, throughput and sealing method a line needs, and integrate it with the rest of the end-of-line, with local support from its Auckland base. Contact APS to discuss an automatic case erector for a new or existing packing line.
