In regulated and high-care production, for example, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, nutraceutical, and hygienic food and dairy manufacturing, the mixer is a critical control point. It must deliver the shear needed to emulsify, homogenise, disperse and dissolve, but it must also be cleanable, drainable and validatable to a standard that eliminates the risk of microbial contamination and cross-batch carryover. A conventional mixer with crevices, dead-legs or exposed seals is a liability in these environments.
The Silverson In-Line Ultra Sanitary (UHS) mixer range is designed specifically for these applications, combining Silverson high shear performance with fully hygienic construction. Supplied and supported in New Zealand by Advanced Packaging Systems (APS), the range meets 3-A and EHEDG hygienic design requirements and complies with FDA and cGMP guidelines. This article covers why hygienic design matters, how the mixer works, the models available, and the applications it serves.

Silverson High Shear In-Line Ultra Hygienic Mixer
Why Hygienic Design Matters in Regulated Mixing
In pharmaceutical, biotech and high-care food processing, equipment must be designed to prevent product from being trapped where it cannot be cleaned or inspected. Crevices, threaded fittings, dead-legs and poorly designed shaft seals all provide sites where product residue and biofilm can accumulate, compromising product safety and making cleaning validation difficult or impossible.
Hygienic mixing equipment addresses this through crevice-free construction, self-draining geometry, product-contact parts in 316L stainless steel, and mechanical seals designed for clean operation. Critically, the equipment must support Clean-In-Place (CIP) and Sterilize-In-Place (SIP), so that cleaning and sterilisation can be carried out in situ without manual dismantling. Recognised hygienic design standards — 3-A Sanitary Standards and EHEDG certification — provide independent verification that equipment meets these requirements.
The Silverson In-Line Ultra Sanitary Range
The Silverson UHS range is a series of multipurpose in-line high shear mixers built to the most stringent hygienic standards. UHS mixers are 3-A TPV (Third Party Verification) Certified and are fitted with EHEDG Certified mechanical shaft seals, with fully EHEDG-certified models available. They are designed to comply with both FDA and cGMP guidelines. Key design features include:
- Self-pumping — the mixer draws and discharges product without a separate transfer pump.
- Aeration-free operation, avoiding entrained air that can destabilise emulsions and suspensions.
- No bypassing — product cannot pass the workhead without being fully sheared.
- Self-draining tangential outlet for complete product recovery and drainage.
- Ultra sanitary single mechanical shaft seals, easily converted to double mechanical seals for pressurised flush.
- Interchangeable workheads for emulsifying, homogenising, disintegrating, dissolving and particle size reduction.
- No manual dismantling for cleaning — full CIP and SIP capability reduces maintenance, lowers operating cost and increases reliability and productivity.
How the Mixer Works
At the heart of every Silverson mixer is a precision-machined rotor/stator workhead operating in three stages. The high-speed rotation of the rotor blades exerts a powerful suction that draws liquid and solid materials into the centre of the workhead. Centrifugal force then drives the material outward, subjecting it to a milling action in the fine clearance between the rotor tips and the stator wall. Finally, intense hydraulic shear is applied as the material is forced at high velocity through the perforations in the stator and out along the pipework, while fresh material is continuously drawn in. This maintains a rapid mixing and pumping cycle that reduces processing times by up to 90% compared with conventional agitation.
Models and Configurations
The Ultra Sanitary range spans laboratory to full production scale, so a formulation can be developed at small scale and transferred to production without reformulation:
UHS Range (Production)
The standard production mixers offer self-pumping throughputs from 5 up to 25,000 gallons per hour. Single-stage rotor/stator configurations are standard; optional multistage workheads provide substantially faster mixing and greater particle size reduction by increasing the number of shearing actions per revolution. Product-contact parts are 316L stainless steel, with sanitary or flange fittings (Tri-Clamp, DIN, ASA) available to suit the line.
| Model | Motor (HP) | Speed (RPM) | Inlet / Outlet (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 275 | 2 | 3,600 | 1½ |
| 425 | 7½ | 3,600 | 2 |
| 450 | 10 | 3,600 | 2 |
| 600 | 30 | 3,600 | 3 |

Verso UHS
An ultra-sanitary version of Silverson’s benchtop in-line mixer, suitable for stringent applications in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries as well as food, cosmetics and other clean processes where a small footprint is required.
150 UHS Small-Scale Ultra Sanitary In-Line Mixer
Built to the same specification as production-scale UHS mixers, the 150 UHS bridges the gap between laboratory equipment and the smallest production mixers. It is ideal for batches of up to 50 litres, features crevice-free construction for CIP and SIP, and can be supplied with hygienic single mechanical seals convertible to double seals for pressurised flush. Data dossier documentation packages conforming to cGMP, FDA and EC1935/2004 are available, and a conversion kit allows it to be run as a Multistage 088/150.
Interchangeable Workheads
A comprehensive range of easily interchangeable workheads and screens allows a single machine to be adapted to the task: General Purpose Disintegrating heads for high throughput and solids reduction; Slotted Disintegrating heads for fibrous and elastic materials; Square Hole High Shear Screens for rapid size reduction of granular solids and fine colloidal suspensions; Emulsor Screens for fine emulsions; and In-Line Multistage workheads for intensified single-pass processing.

Applications
The Ultra Sanitary range is specified wherever hygienic assurance and validation are non-negotiable. In pharmaceutical and nutraceutical manufacturing, it is used for tablet coating suspensions, ointments and creams, API and excipient suspensions, and the emulsification of vaccine adjuvants. In biotechnology, it supports the preparation of cell culture media and buffers. For a broader discussion of these processes, see the APS article on high shear mixing in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical manufacturing.
In high-care food and dairy processing, the UHS mixer produces stable flavour and colour emulsions, hydrates stabilisers and gums, and disperses ingredients in closed, CIP-cleanable pipework — the same hygienic principles discussed in the APS article on high shear mixing in dairy processing. Because the mixer is self-pumping and aeration-free, it integrates directly into continuous and semi-continuous production without introducing air or requiring open-vessel handling.
