New Zealand’s sports nutrition and supplement makers are under growing pressure to demonstrate quality, consistency and hygiene — to their customers, to regulators and to export markets. Much of that comes down to the processing equipment behind the product: how powders are blended, how proteins are mixed and dissolved, and how contamination is kept out. Sports nutrition manufacturing is as much an equipment challenge as a formulation one, and Advanced Packaging Systems (APS) supplies and supports the processing equipment behind it, as a single local point of contact in New Zealand.

What Makes Sports Nutrition Manufacturing Demanding

Protein powders, pre-workouts, greens and ready-to-drink (RTD) products share a set of processing challenges: fine, cohesive powders that are prone to lumping and dust; active ingredients dosed at low inclusion rates that must be distributed evenly; proteins that are difficult to wet out and dissolve; and strict hygiene and traceability requirements. The difference between a consistent, premium product and a variable one is usually found in the blending, mixing and screening steps — not the recipe. Getting this equipment right is what makes batch-to-batch quality repeatable.

High Shear Mixing: Dispersing and Dissolving Proteins

Protein and functional powders are notoriously hard to incorporate into liquid — added to a tank they tend to form lumps and partially wetted agglomerates that resist mixing and trap dry powder inside. Silverson high shear mixers disperse these powders into the liquid and hydrate them rapidly, breaking down agglomerates to give a smooth, uniform result. For higher volumes, the Silverson Flashmix forces powder directly into the liquid stream rather than relying on vacuum, allowing large quantities of protein to be incorporated even at higher viscosities. The same high shear action is used to make stable emulsions and to disperse flavours, vitamins and colours in RTD protein drinks and shots.

Precise Powder Blending

Dry-blended products — protein blends, pre-workouts, amino acid and creatine mixes — depend on even distribution of every ingredient, including micro-ingredients added in small amounts. Dinnissen Pegasus® mixers blend gently but thoroughly, achieving a homogeneous mix without segregating the blend or damaging friable ingredients, and can incorporate liquids such as flavours or oils into a powder base. Consistent blending is what allows a manufacturer to guarantee that every serving delivers the labelled dose.

Milling and Delumping

Hygroscopic protein and supplement powders often clump in storage or form lumps during handling. Hanningfield Uni-Mill conical mills delump and size these powders to a consistent particle size before blending or packing, improving flow, dosing accuracy and the appearance and solubility of the finished product. Controlled particle size also helps downstream blending and screening run smoothly.

Screening and Metal Contamination Control

Check-screening protects both product quality and consumer safety. Russell Finex vibratory sieves screen incoming and finished powders to remove foreign material and oversized agglomerates, while a Russell Easy-Clean Magnetic Separator™ captures ferrous metal that can enter during milling, blending or handling. For manufacturers exporting to markets with strict contamination standards, combining sieving with magnetic separation provides a demonstrable, layered defence against physical and metal contamination.

Filling and Packaging

Once blended and screened, sports nutrition products are filled into tubs, pouches or sachets and sealed. APS supplies filling, capping and labelling equipment through its partner brands, so a manufacturer can source and integrate the processing and packaging stages of a line through a single local supplier rather than coordinating several.

Building Quality and Compliance In

The equipment choices above are what let a manufacturer show, rather than claim, that a product is made to a consistent standard — even distribution of actives, reliable dosing, contamination control and full cleanability between batches. This sits within the wider picture of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical processing that APS supports, where the same principles of hygiene, consistency and traceability apply.

Local Support in New Zealand

For a growing sports nutrition manufacturer, local support is often what keeps a line running. Advanced Packaging Systems supplies and integrates Silverson, Dinnissen, Hanningfield and Russell Finex equipment for New Zealand supplement and sports nutrition manufacturers, and acts as a single local point of contact for advice, installation, spare parts and servicing from its Auckland base. Contact APS to discuss equipment for a new sports nutrition line or an upgrade to an existing one.
