Developing a new formulation in the laboratory and reproducing those results consistently at production scale are two different challenges. The high shear mixer used at the bench sets the conditions for the rest of the process: if the mixing action at laboratory scale does not replicate what the production equipment delivers, scale-up becomes a trial-and-error exercise rather than a controlled transition.

High shear mixing at laboratory scale requires equipment that can deliver the same intensity of shear, the same mixing actions, and the same workhead geometry as the production mixer — at batch sizes ranging from a few millilitres to several litres. Without that equivalence, results obtained in the laboratory have limited predictive value for the production environment.

The Silverson L5M-A is the standard laboratory high shear mixer in the Silverson range. It is used across R&D, quality assurance, formulation development, and small-scale production in food and beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and chemical applications. What Is the Silverson L5M-A?

The L5M-A is a benchtop batch high shear mixer designed for laboratory and pilot-scale work. It handles batch sizes from 1 ml up to approximately 12 litres depending on material viscosity, making it suitable for analytical work, formulation development, and small batch production in a single unit.

The “A” designation denotes an adjustable mixing head, allowing the workhead height to be set precisely within the vessel. The unit is driven by a 750 W (1 hp) motor with a nominal maximum speed of 8,000 rpm — delivering the high tip speeds required to achieve genuine high shear mixing action rather than simple agitation.

Critically, the L5M-A uses the same rotor-stator workhead geometry as the Silverson production batch mixer range. This means that process conditions and outcomes achieved at laboratory scale can be replicated directly at production scale without reformulation, reducing development time and scale-up risk.

How the L5M-A Works

The L5M-A uses Silverson’s rotor-stator mixing mechanism. The high-speed rotor rotates within a precision-machined stator (workhead), generating four distinct mixing actions simultaneously:

  • Suction: The rotor draws materials upward from below the workhead, creating continuous circulation within the batch.
  • Mechanical shear: Materials pass through the narrow clearance between the rotor blades and stator wall, subjecting them to intense mechanical shearing force.
  • Hydraulic shear: Materials are forced through the precision-machined perforations of the stator under high velocity, creating intense hydraulic shear at the point of expulsion.
  • Expulsion and circulation: Mixed material is expelled radially from the workhead at high velocity, creating vigorous circulation throughout the batch.

This combination of actions achieves, within a single pass through the workhead, what would require multiple passes or separate pieces of equipment using conventional agitation.

The L5M-A is supplied with a range of interchangeable workheads, each optimised for different mixing tasks. The appropriate workhead is selected based on the application — emulsification, dispersion, dissolution, disintegration, or particle size reduction — without changing the base unit.

Key Benefits of the Silverson L5M-A

Wide batch range in a single unit

A batch range of 1 ml to 12 litres covers analytical work, formulation screening, process development, and small-scale production without requiring multiple pieces of equipment. This is particularly valuable in research environments where formulation volumes vary widely across different project stages.

Interchangeable workheads for multiple applications

The L5M-A is supplied with a standard General Purpose Disintegrating workhead and is compatible with the full range of Silverson interchangeable workheads: Square Hole High Shear Screen, Round Hole High Shear Screen, Emulsor Screen, Slotted Disintegrating Head, and Axial Flow Head. This allows a single laboratory unit to perform emulsification, dispersion, dissolution, homogenisation, and particle size reduction as formulation requirements change.

Direct scale-up to production

Because the L5M-A uses the same rotor-stator geometry as Silverson’s production batch mixer range, results at laboratory scale translate predictably to production. This is not guaranteed with all laboratory mixers — where the mixing mechanism differs between lab and production equipment, scale-up involves re-optimising the process rather than simply increasing batch size.

Speed control and reproducibility

The variable speed control allows mixing intensity to be set and recorded precisely, enabling exact replication of conditions across batches and between operators. This is important for QA work and for establishing documented process parameters during formulation development.

Compact and practical for bench use

At 22 kg and 940 mm in height, the L5M-A is designed for bench use in a standard laboratory environment. It operates on standard single-phase power and requires no specialist installation or infrastructure beyond a stable work surface.

Industries and Applications

Food and Beverage

The L5M-A is used extensively in food and beverage formulation for emulsification of dressings, sauces, and spreads; dispersion of gums and stabilisers; homogenisation of dairy products; and dissolution of flavours and food colours. Its compact size and broad batch range make it practical for use in production kitchens and QA laboratories as well as R&D facilities.

Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical

In pharmaceutical development, the L5M-A is used for preparing suspensions, dispersing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), hydrating excipients, and preparing granulation solutions. The ability to establish precise, reproducible process parameters at laboratory scale — and transfer them directly to production — is particularly valuable in environments governed by regulatory documentation requirements.

Cosmetics and Personal Care

Formulation of creams, lotions, gels, and shampoos requires consistent emulsification and dispersion of aqueous and oil phases, pigments, and active ingredients. The L5M-A delivers the shear intensity required to produce stable emulsions and uniform dispersions at laboratory scale, with a clear pathway to production-scale Silverson batch mixers.

Chemical

In chemical research and development, the L5M-A is used for dissolving polymers, dispersing pigments and fillers, preparing resin solutions, and producing fine emulsions for adhesive and coating applications. The broad chemical resistance of the stainless steel construction allows use across a wide range of solvents and process chemicals.

What to Consider When Selecting a Laboratory High Shear Mixer

When evaluating laboratory-scale high shear mixing equipment, the following factors are worth considering:

  • Batch size range: Confirm the unit covers the full range of volumes you require — from the smallest analytical or screening batch to the largest pilot-scale run. Units with a narrow batch range may require supplementary equipment as project scale increases.
  • Workhead interchangeability: If your laboratory handles diverse formulation types, interchangeable workheads allow a single unit to cover emulsification, dispersion, dissolution, and particle size reduction. Confirm compatibility with the range of workheads available for the unit.
  • Scale-up pathway: Verify that the laboratory mixer uses the same rotor-stator geometry as the production equipment you intend to scale to. Without geometric equivalence, laboratory results may not transfer reliably to production.
  • Speed control and data recording: Variable speed control is essential for optimising mixing intensity and for producing reproducible results. If regulatory documentation is required, confirm that speed settings can be recorded accurately.
  • Hygiene requirements: For food, dairy, or pharmaceutical applications, confirm that the wetted parts meet the relevant material specifications (FDA-compliant stainless steel and polymers) and that the workhead design supports effective cleaning and verification between formulations.
