How Vibratory Screening Works

A vibratory screener passes material — whether dry powder, granule, or liquid slurry — across a tensioned mesh screen under controlled vibration. Particles or droplets that fall within the acceptance specification pass through the mesh; oversize material, agglomerates, and contamination are retained on the screen surface and discharged to a separate outlet or rejection point.

The effectiveness of the process depends on three variables: mesh aperture size, amplitude and frequency of vibration, and contact time (dwell time) on the screen surface. Mesh aperture determines the separation point; vibration keeps the material in motion and prevents blinding (mesh clogging); dwell time determines throughput and separation efficiency. All three must be matched to the specific material characteristics — bulk density, particle size distribution, moisture content, and flowability.

The Russell Compact Sieve®: Design and Specification

The Russell Compact Sieve® is engineered to deliver the screening performance of a full-size industrial sieve in approximately half the footprint of traditional designs. This makes it particularly well-suited to in-line integration in production environments where floor space is constrained, and to retrofit applications where a check screening step is being added to an existing line.

Key design and performance specifications:

  • Mesh range — Fine mesh screening to 20 microns. The Compact Sieve handles the full range from coarse check screening (removing lumps and agglomerates from powders) through to fine-mesh separation of particles at the boundary of what is visible to the naked eye.
  • Material handling — Suitable for both dry powders and liquid slurries. The same machine platform handles free-flowing powders, cohesive powders, granules, and wet or pumpable materials, making it a versatile choice across process lines that handle multiple material types.
  • Footprint — Approximately half the floor area of traditional vibratory sieves of equivalent throughput. The compact design allows installation in line positions that would not accommodate a standard-diameter sieve, including directly above filling or packing equipment.
  • Noise output — Operates at 70 dBA — significantly quieter than conventional vibratory screening equipment. Solid rubber suspension absorbs structural vibration, reducing noise transmission to the surrounding structure and improving operator environment compliance.
  • Maintenance access — Tool-free strip-down for mesh inspection, cleaning, and replacement. The ability to change screen meshes without tools reduces maintenance time and eliminates the risk of tools being left in the machine — a critical consideration in food and pharmaceutical GMP environments.

Vibrasonic® Ultrasonic Deblinding

Fine mesh screening — particularly with cohesive, static-prone, or near-mesh-size particles — is susceptible to mesh blinding: the progressive clogging of the mesh apertures that reduces screening efficiency and throughput. The conventional response is to reduce the mesh tension or increase the amplitude of vibration, both of which compromise separation accuracy.

The Russell Finex Vibrasonic® system addresses mesh blinding through ultrasonic deblinding. A transducer attached to the screen frame excites the mesh at ultrasonic frequency, creating micro-vibrations that prevent particles from lodging in the mesh apertures. The result is sustained high throughput at fine mesh sizes without compromising the separation cut point. The Vibrasonic® system is available as an upgrade to the Compact Sieve platform and is particularly recommended for fine mesh applications below 150 microns and for cohesive or electrostatically active materials. Installation and Validation Considerations

The Russell Compact Sieve® is designed for in-line integration at any point in the process where a screening step is required. Typical installation positions are immediately upstream of blending or mixing, directly above filling or packing equipment, or at the transfer point from storage to process. The machine’s compact footprint and standard inlet/outlet connections make it straightforward to retrofit into existing lines.

For pharmaceutical applications, the tool-free design supports cleaning validation by reducing the number of cleaning steps and eliminating the variables introduced by tooled disassembly. Mesh change records, cleaning records, and inspection frequencies can be built into existing batch documentation without modification to the machine itself.
